Ingredients

Measurements

Converted for display; the recipe amounts stay equivalent.

  • 450 gpork sausage, casings removed if necessary
  • 8 pcsegg, large
  • 1 cupmilk
  • 1 cupcheddar cheese, grated
  • 1.5 cupcrouton
  • 0.5 tspsalt
  • 0.25 tspblack pepper, freshly ground(optional)

Equipment

8-inch square baking dish · mixing bowl · skillet · whisk · oven

The method

Step by step

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 160°C (325°F) and lightly grease an 8-inch square baking dish.

    About 5 min

  2. 2

In a medium skillet over medium-high heat, cook the pork sausage, breaking it apart with a spoon, until it is browned and cooked through.

    About 7 min

Cook’s note: If you are using sausage links, be sure to remove the casings before cooking.

  3. 3

Drain off any excess grease from the skillet.

    About 1 min

  4. 4

Spread the cooked sausage in an even layer in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

    About 1 min

  5. 5

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and optional black pepper until well combined.

    About 2 min

  6. 6

Stir the grated cheddar cheese into the egg mixture.

    About 1 min

  7. 7

Pour the egg and cheese mixture evenly over the sausage in the baking dish.

    About 1 min

  8. 8

Sprinkle the croutons over the top and gently press them down so they are partially submerged in the egg mixture.

    About 2 min

Cook’s note: This helps the croutons absorb some of the custard and become tender on the bottom while staying crisp on top.

  9. 9

Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes, or until the eggs are set and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

    About 40 min

  10. 10

Let the bake rest for a few minutes before cutting into squares and serving.

    About 5 min
