Ingredients
- 1 pcsrefrigerated biscuit dough, 1 can, 8 biscuits
- 4 pcstart apple, small, peeled and cored
syrup
- 113 gunsalted butter
- 200 ggranulated sugar
- 1 tspground cinnamon
- 300 mlsugar-sweetened lemon-lime soda (7 Up)
- 1 tspvanilla extract(optional)
Equipment
saucepan · apple corer · rolling pin · knife · oven · baking dish
The method
Step by step
- 1
Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F) and lightly grease a 23x33 cm (9x13 inch) baking dish.
About 5 min
Cook’s note: Using a glass or ceramic baking dish helps with even heating.
- 2
Separate the refrigerated biscuit dough into individual biscuits.
About 1 min
- 3
On a lightly floured surface, roll or press each biscuit into a thin round, large enough to fully enclose an apple.
About 7 min
Cook’s note: If the dough is sticky, dust your hands and the rolling pin with a little flour.
- 4
Wrap one dough round around each peeled and cored apple, pinching the seams firmly to seal.
About 5 min
- 5
Place the wrapped apples seam-side down in the prepared baking dish.
About 1 min
Cook’s note: Leave a little space between each dumpling to allow the syrup to bubble up around them.
- 6
In a small saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.
About 2 min
- 7
Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon until combined.
About 1 min
- 8
Slowly pour in the lemon-lime soda and optional vanilla extract, then return to the heat and bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
About 3 min
Cook’s note: Pour the soda in slowly as it will foam up when it hits the hot butter mixture.
- 9
Carefully pour the hot syrup mixture over and around the dumplings in the baking dish.
About 1 min
- 10
Bake for 30-35 minutes, until the dough is deep golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a knife.
About 35 min
Cook’s note: The syrup will reduce and thicken as it bakes.
- 11
Let the dumplings cool in the dish for at least 10 minutes before serving.
About 10 min
Cook’s note: This allows the sauce to thicken into a lovely syrup.
- 12
Serve warm, spooning extra syrup from the pan over each dumpling.
Cook’s note: These are delicious on their own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Keep it good
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Reheat individual dumplings in the microwave for 30-60 seconds or in a 150°C (300°F) oven until warm.
