The method
Step by step
- 1
Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
About 5 min
- 2
Heat half of the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
About 1 min
- 3
Add the yellow onion and bell pepper to the skillet and sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened.
About 7 min
- 4
Stir in the garlic, cumin, smoked paprika, and chili powder. Cook for another minute until fragrant.
About 1 min
- 5
In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until chunky but not completely smooth.
About 3 min
Cook’s note: Leave some whole beans for texture.
- 6
Add the sautéed vegetable mixture, oats, salt, and black pepper to the mashed black beans. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
About 2 min
- 7
Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties, about 1-inch thick.
About 3 min
Cook’s note: If the mixture is too wet, add a tablespoon more oats. If too dry, add a splash of water.

Place the patties on the prepared baking sheet.

Bake for 10-12 minutes per side, flipping carefully halfway through, until the burgers are firm and lightly browned.
About 24 min
Cook’s note: Alternatively, pan-fry the patties in the remaining olive oil over medium heat for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and heated through.
- 10
Serve the black bean burgers hot on hamburger buns with vegan mayonnaise, lettuce leaves, and tomato slices.
