  • 1,000 mlwater
  • 45 gginger, freshly grated
  • 5 pcspeppermint tea bag
  • 5 pcsfruity herbal tea bag, e.g. berry or lemon
  • 90 mllemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 60 mlmaple syrup, or to taste(optional)

Equipment

pot · fine-mesh strainer · grater · citrus juicer · knife · pitcher

The method

Step by step

  1. 1

In a medium pot, combine the water and freshly grated ginger.

    About 1 min

  2. 2

Place the pot over high heat and bring the mixture to a rolling boil.

    About 5 min

  3. 3

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 5 minutes until the ginger becomes aromatic.

    About 5 min

  4. 4

Remove the pot from the heat.

  5. 5

Add both the peppermint and fruity herbal tea bags to the hot ginger water.

    About 1 min

  6. 6

Cover the pot and let the tea bags steep for 20 minutes to infuse their flavors.

    About 20 min

Cook’s note: Steeping for longer can result in a stronger, sometimes more bitter flavor, so adjust to your preference.

  7. 7

Pour the liquid through a fine-mesh strainer into a large pitcher to remove the tea bags and ginger; discard the solids.

    About 2 min

  8. 8

Stir the freshly squeezed lemon juice into the warm tea base.

    About 1 min

  9. 9

If using, add the maple syrup or another sweetener, stirring until fully dissolved. Taste and add more if desired.

    About 1 min

  10. 10

Place the pitcher in the refrigerator to chill for at least 60 minutes, or until completely cold.

    About 1 hr

  11. 11

Serve the herbal punch chilled, over ice if you like.
