Ingredients

Measurements

Converted for display; the recipe amounts stay equivalent.

  • 1 tbspolive oil
  • 450 gpork sausage, casings removed if necessary
  • 1 pcsyellow onion, chopped
  • 240 mltomato sauce
  • 240 gcanned kidney bean, drained and rinsed
  • 100 gcheddar cheese, shredded
  • 0.5 tspsalt(optional)
  • 0.25 tspblack pepper, freshly ground(optional)

Equipment

large skillet · spoon · cutting board · knife

The method

Step by step

  1. 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

    About 1 min

  2. 2

Add the pork sausage and chopped onion to the skillet.

Cook’s note: Use a wooden spoon or spatula to break the sausage into small crumbles as it cooks.

  3. 3

Cook for about 8-10 minutes until the sausage is fully browned and the onion is soft and translucent.

    About 10 min

  4. 4

Carefully tilt the pan and use a spoon to drain off any excess grease.

    About 1 min

Cook’s note: Leaving a little fat adds flavor, but remove most of it to prevent the filling from being too greasy.

  5. 5

Reduce the heat to low and stir in the tomato sauce and the drained kidney beans.

    About 1 min

  6. 6

Add the shredded cheddar cheese, salt, and black pepper, stirring continuously until the cheese is just melted and incorporated.

    About 1 min

Cook’s note: Don't overheat after adding the cheese, as it can become oily.

  7. 7

The filling is now ready to be used as a topping for your pizza base before baking.
