Ingredients

Measurements

Converted for display; the recipe amounts stay equivalent.

  • 4 tbspblack tea, thai tea mix is preferred
  • 2 cupwater
  • 4 tbspgranulated sugar
  • 4 tbspsweetened condensed milk
  • 4 tbspevaporated milk
  • 2 cupice

Equipment

saucepan · glasses · fine-mesh sieve · pitcher

The method

Step by step

  1. 1

Bring the water to a boil in a small saucepan.

    About 5 min

  2. 2

Remove the saucepan from heat and add the black tea. Stir well to ensure all the tea is submerged.

    About 1 min

  3. 3

Let the tea steep for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to fully develop.

    About 5 min

Cook’s note: For a stronger tea, you can steep for up to 10 minutes.

  4. 4

Strain the tea through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a heatproof pitcher or jar, discarding the tea leaves.

    About 1 min

Cook’s note: Ensure no tea leaves remain for a smooth drink.

  5. 5

Add the granulated sugar to the hot tea and stir until it is completely dissolved.

    About 1 min

  6. 6

Stir in the sweetened condensed milk until fully combined.

    About 1 min

  7. 7

Let the tea cool down to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until thoroughly chilled.

    About 2 hr

Cook’s note: Chilling ensures the ice doesn't melt too quickly and dilute the flavor.

  8. 8

Fill two tall glasses with ice.

  9. 9

Pour the chilled tea over the ice in each glass.

  10. 10

Slowly pour the evaporated milk over the top of each glass of tea. It will create a beautiful layered effect.

Cook’s note: Do not stir the evaporated milk in immediately for the best presentation.

  11. 11

Serve immediately and stir before drinking.
